Kaduna state’s governor, Mallam Nasir El-rufai, has stated that Nigeria does not collect enough tax as she should.
The governor made this statement while speaking at the annual meeting of the Chartered Institute of Taxation Nigeria (CITN), as a keynote speaker.
According to him, the 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) is no way near the amount being collected in other countries.
He further claimed that just few Nigerians pay tax, usually civil, public servants and few others, whose tax are usually deducted from the source.
He explained that the economy can never develop without adequate tax, as Nigeria’s taxation still fall below 5% of her GDP, and some states fall below 1%.
The governor also declared that between 2015 and 2019 his administration has improved in revenue collection in the state, moving from ₦13.55 billion in 2015 to ₦44.9 billion in 2019.
